Opening Poem: A LETTER TO MY HEART

It’s hard to admit

that I haven’t been listening.

I have been asking a whole

lot of questions,

but being willing to receive

an answer is something different.

All I can do is

fold my knees into love letters

and say, I’m sorry

for those things I’ve said

and those things I’ve done.

I’m sorry heart

that we got so lost,

for so long.

I am listening now.

I am listening now.

Waiting patiently

with my soul in my lap

and we are wanting to go home.

I have spent too many years

trying to prove that I am

worthy of love.

I’ve spent too many nights begging

the stars for answers,

pouring my heartache out

to a black sky that I know

won’t answer.

All I know is that I know

nothing, except for this

heavy grief living in my bones.

My bones, thank god

for these pieces that are holding

me together.

As I pull apart my ribcage

to get a better look at the old

stories swirling around my heart.

I fold them up into love letters that

will never be sent.

I never wanted to trap you in it,

I just wanted to keep you safe.

I’ve spent too long feeling unsafe,

learning how to build homes

out of people.

I never learned how dangerous

it was to do that.

I’m sorry heart,

that I built so many homes

away from us.

That I didn’t take the time to love

this incredible home of mine.

I have written so many love letters,

apologizing for my too-much-ness.

And in all those letters I watched burn,

not once have I written a letter for you.

My tender home

with delicate roots

asking for just a little

more water.

Asking for me to be here,

here in my body.

This letter is for you

calling to the softest parts,

it’s okay to come out.

You are not too much.

You are not hard to love.

and my dear, gentle,

holy vulnerable heart,

you will always

be enough.

Here is where we remember

the magic.

Here is where I learn how

to hold you.

Here is where I learn how

to build a home for us too.

Here is where I show you,

beautiful heart,

that we have nothing

to prove.

and it is time,

it is time to come out.

I’m sorry heart that

we got so lost,

for so long.

I am listening now.

I am  l i s t e n i n g  now.
