“Genius is the spirit that is already there in each person, the inner intention, primary style and way of being that makes a true individual regardless of the pressure to conform… At the individual level, each person is here to give something that is not just unusual, not only exceptional, but that is unique and valuable by its very nature.” – Michael Meade
Each of us comes into this world as a unique being with a unique fingerprint, a unique ancestral inheritance, at a unique time in history, and we each have a unique genius that has never existed before in this world and will never exist again after we leave. A central question to ask in a human life is, “Did I become myself?” “Did I bring my voice, my contribution, and my medicine to this world?”
What are the factors that support or inhibit the process of fully becoming oneself?
What feeds our genius? What brings it to life? What starves or depletes it? As our own genius path has never been walked before, it cannot be mapped or charted entirely by any tradition or model. We will look at ways to be in relationship with our genius path like a sensitive tracker, following its scent, noticing the signs and indicators that tell us when we are close or when we have lost connection.
We will also look at ways to recognize, call out to, and nourish the unique genius in our children, friends, spouses, clients, students, or colleagues.
We will explore some of the obstacles to embodying genius in our educational system, along with the challenges that come with following a unique path in a capitalist culture that pushes us toward conformity.
Both Rumi and Carl Jung wrote, “The genius hides behind the wound.” We will explore the connection with genius, wounds, and healing– as individuals and as a culture.
Hopefully, you will leave this talk with refined skills of courtship, a bit more comfortable to be your own weird self, with an eye ready to recognize the irreplaceable genius of those around you. You’ll gain some insight into how necessary your presence is, and how you are uniquely called to respond to the challenging times in which we find ourselves.
