Jung Society Think Tank – Interview with Think Tank Founder Justin Harnish

Why is the Jung Society hosting a think tank? Can I join?

Think tanks are sometimes associated with political ideologies (and the risk of groupthink), but that’s not what is planned here. Nor is this intended to be a gathering of psychoanalysts discussing ways to treat neuroses or interpret dreams. Instead, this project aims to bring together 12 bright and eager minds to discuss and share ideas, and, in the course of doing so, become a beneficial influence for the community.

This project arose from an idea that Justin Harnish had, rising from his self-confessed mythologizing of the ancient Greek schools. You’ve probably seen the famous Raphael painting of the School of Athens, and indeed, Justin’s brainchild was born of the same spirit of interdisciplinary curiosity that sparked the Renaissance. He brought his experience with interdisciplinary investigations and community activism to conversations with Machiel Klerk to develop this project: a monthly forum for the exchange of ideas by bright, creative thinkers on the cutting edge of their fields.

Each meeting will begin with a half-hour presentation by one of the members, in the style of a TED talk, but held to a more rigorous standard. Following this, the group will hold a two-hour workshop-style discussion to examine and enrich the ideas of the original presenter from the perspectives of multiple disciplines.

Dr. Jung’s own example of open-eyed and open-minded inquiry serves as an example here: his psychology was never limited to a narrow view of a hyper-specialized question. It was informed by an intuitive apprehension of the vastness of the human psyche and a keen insight into unconscious effects on individual and social problems, and it is expressed to us in finely-tuned prose. In a similar way, the Jung Society will host interdisciplinary investigations of relevant problems while reviving the lost art of rhetoric.

This informative video presentation explains the composition, operation and aims of the Think Tank on more detail.
